How Hajj registration works in Australia

Australia has no government Hajj office; Australian pilgrims book through Saudi Arabia's Nusuk Hajj platform or a private Australian Hajj travel agent. Agents offering flights should hold an Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) accreditation or equivalent consumer protection cover, and Australia's Muslim community organizations periodically publish guidance on vetting operators given past reports of unlicensed 'Hajj tour' sellers advertising outside normal channels. Booking typically opens close to a year ahead of travel with a deposit followed by installments, and given Australia's distance from Saudi Arabia, flight routing, usually via the Gulf, Southeast Asia, or occasionally Europe, is a bigger cost and itinerary factor than it is for closer Western countries, so confirming layovers and total travel time matters before booking.

Australia has no national Hajj mission or quota office. The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah lists Australia among the countries served directly by the Nusuk Hajj platform, so Australians register on Nusuk, choose a package from a licensed Saudi service provider and pay there. An Australian travel agency can help you with flights and paperwork, but the Hajj package and visa are issued through Nusuk.

Step by step

  1. Create an account on hajj.nusuk.sa when registration opens for the coming season (for Hajj 2026 it opened in autumn 2025) and verify your identity with your passport.
  2. Compare packages from licensed Saudi service providers inside the platform: camp location in Mina, hotel distance in Makkah and Madinah, transport, and what meals are included. Read our guide to Nusuk package tiers first.
  3. Pay through the platform. Your Hajj visa, Nusuk card and permits are issued against that booking; no Australian agency can issue them separately.
  4. Book your own flights to Jeddah or Madinah for the dates on the package, and get the meningococcal vaccine at least 10 days before you fly.
  5. If you want help, use an Australian agency only for flights, preparation classes and group travel, and confirm the Hajj package itself sits in your own Nusuk account.

Typical timeline

WhenWhat happens
About 8 to 9 months before HajjNusuk Hajj registration opens; create your account and complete identity checks.
7 to 5 months beforePackage sales open in phases; the early-preference phase for eligible pilgrims ran in January 2026. Compare and pay.
4 to 2 months beforeVisa and Nusuk card issued against your booking; book flights; vaccinations at least 10 days before departure.
Dhul HijjahTravel on the package dates; the Ministry publishes cut-off dates for arrivals.

Illustrative order of events; the authority publishes exact dates each season and they move with the Hijri calendar.

What it costs from Australia

A single authoritative, currently sourced package price in Australian dollars was not found in available reporting, pricing is set independently by each private agent rather than a published national figure, and Australia's long-haul routing adds further variation. We point prospective pilgrims to compare current agents' published price lists or use our calculator rather than quoting a figure here. Rather than guess, compare current licensed operators' published price lists side by side, since the main cost drivers, hotel distance from the Haram, flight class, and group size, vary more between operators than between years.

The drivers are the same everywhere: camp category in Mina, hotel distance from the Haram in Makkah and Madinah, room sharing, flights from Australia, and whether meals and internal transport are bundled. See Hajj budgeting and shifting versus non-shifting packages.

Hajj packages from Australia: what you are actually buying

There is no Australian Hajj package in the old sense. The Hajj visa, the Mina camp, the hotels and the transport between the holy sites are sold as one package by licensed Saudi providers inside the Nusuk Hajj platform, and the package must sit in your own Nusuk account. An Australian travel agency can legitimately sell you the flights (there is no nonstop service, so every itinerary connects once through a Gulf or South-East Asian hub), preparation classes, and group travel around the Nusuk booking; it cannot issue a Hajj visa or a Mina place. When comparing "packages from Australia", separate the two: compare the Nusuk tier on camp zone, hotel distance and room sharing, and compare the agency's flight and service fee on its own. The Hajj from Australia walkthrough covers the timeline and the AFTA check for flight sellers, and Hajj cost from Australia explains each price driver.

Umrah from Australia while you wait

Australian passport holders are on the Saudi eVisa list, so you can apply yourself on the official portal (visa.visitsaudi.com) or through Nusuk and perform Umrah on that visa outside the Hajj season. There is no Australian Hajj or Umrah authority and no requirement to use an agent, though many families still book a package for the flights and Nusuk hotel bookings.

Vaccines and health documents for Hajj and Umrah from Australia

These are the Saudi Ministry of Health requirements for Umrah travellers in the 1447 H (2026) edition, read for Australia specifically. The Hajj list is issued separately each season and is normally the same or stricter. Certificates are checked at the airport of departure and on arrival.

RequirementWhat applies to travellers from Australia
Meningococcal (ACYW) vaccineRequired for every pilgrim from every country: conjugate vaccine within 5 years, or polysaccharide within 3 years, given at least 10 days before arrival.
PolioNot required for travellers from Australia in the 1447 H list. Keep routine immunisation up to date.
Yellow feverNot required for travellers arriving from Australia. It applies only if you arrive from a listed yellow fever country.
COVID-19Required only for higher-risk groups (over 65, pregnant, chronic heart, lung or kidney disease, blood disorders, immunodeficiency, cancer, chronic neurological disease): an updated 2025-2026 dose, a completed 2021-2024 primary series, or confirmed infection in 2025.

Saudi embassy and consulates in Australia

The Saudi Embassy in Australia is in Canberra, with a consular post in Sydney (Consulate-General). You do not need to visit them for a tourist eVisa or an Umrah visa: both are issued online. The embassy matters for passport problems, document attestation, and visa categories that are not electronic. Opening hours and services are on each mission's page at mofa.gov.sa.

Flying to Jeddah or Madinah from Australia

Saudia does not list a passenger route from Australia, so pilgrims from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane connect once, usually through a Gulf or South-East Asian hub, with total journey times of roughly 18 to 22 hours.

Jeddah (King Abdulaziz International) is the gateway for Makkah; Madinah (Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International) suits pilgrims starting in Madinah. Gulf carriers, flynas, flyadeal and national airlines also serve these markets, often at lower fares with one stop.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Paying a "Hajj package" to an agent or individual outside Nusuk. For serviced countries the Ministry issues Hajj visas only through the platform, and pilgrims with outside bookings have been refused entry.
  • Waiting for prices to fall. Packages sell out in order of popularity, and the cheapest tiers go first.
  • Assuming an Umrah or tourist visa can be used for Hajj. It cannot.
  • Booking flights before the package is confirmed in your Nusuk account.

Practical tips

  • Check that any agent selling flights holds AFTA accreditation or equivalent
  • Get references from an established mosque or Islamic center before booking
  • Factor in that long-haul routing via the Gulf or Southeast Asia is a major cost driver
  • Book early given the smaller number of Australia-specific group departures
  • Check the Nusuk Hajj platform directly as an alternative to a private agent
