The days of Hajj: a simple timeline

Hajj unfolds over five key days. Here is what happens on each, at a glance.

1
8 Dhul Hijjah — Tarwiyah
Enter ihram (if Tamattu) and travel to Mina. Spend the day and night in prayer.
2
9 Dhul Hijjah — Arafah
The essence of Hajj: stand at Arafah (wuquf) from midday until sunset in dua. After sunset, travel to Muzdalifah, gather pebbles and stay overnight.
3
10 Dhul Hijjah — Eid & Nahr
Stone Jamrat al-Aqabah, offer the sacrifice (qurbani), shave or trim the hair, then perform Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'i in Makkah.
4
11–13 Dhul Hijjah — Tashreeq
Stay in Mina and stone all three Jamarat each day. Leave after the 12th or 13th.
5
Before departure — Wada
Perform the farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada) before leaving Makkah.
Note: this is a general overview. The exact order and rulings have differences between schools of thought. Follow a qualified scholar and your group's guide.
