Hajj from the USA: a planning walkthrough for American pilgrims

The United States is on the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's serviced-countries list, so American passport holders book Hajj directly on the Nusuk Hajj platform: your own account, a package from a licensed Saudi provider, payment on the platform, and a Hajj visa issued against that booking. There is no US government Hajj office and no American agency can issue a Hajj visa. This guide follows the season as an American pilgrim lives it, from the fall before Hajj to the flight home. The reference facts (quota, consulates, flights, health lists, sources) are on Hajj from the United States; the platform screens are in the Nusuk registration guide.

Your route: Nusuk direct, not an agency

Unlike Indonesia, Pakistan or Turkey, the United States has no ministry, no lottery and no national Hajj mission. The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah serves American pilgrims directly through the Nusuk Hajj platform (hajj.nusuk.sa), listed under North America on its serviced-countries page, and that is the only channel that produces a Hajj visa for a US passport. The package you buy there is assembled by a Saudi service provider licensed by the Ministry: Hajj visa, hotels in Makkah and Madinah, the camp in Mina and the facilities at Arafah and Muzdalifah, transport between the holy sites, and a defined level of meals and guidance. Flights across the Atlantic are usually outside the package. The reported US allocation has been around 9,500 pilgrims in recent seasons, small for a Muslim population of several million, which is why the sales phases move quickly.

The consequence for planning is that the decision is made in your Nusuk account, not across a travel agent's desk. If a package is not visible under your login on hajj.nusuk.sa, you do not have a Hajj booking, whatever a receipt or a WhatsApp message says.

What a US agency can still do

American Hajj groups have long been organised around mosques and community agencies, and that still has value: preparation classes, a scholar or experienced guide travelling with the group, help for parents who struggle with the platform, coordinated flights out of the same airport, and the Madinah days. What no US agency can do is sell the Hajj visa or the Mina place. There is no US equivalent of the UK's ATOL bonding for Hajj, so vetting is on you: check the agency's business registration, ask for references from established mosques and Islamic centers, ask how many consecutive seasons it has operated, and watch for the scam warnings that national Islamic organisations publish each booking season. Get in writing what the agency supplies (flights, classes, guiding, transfers) and what sits in Nusuk (visa, hotels, camp, transport in the Kingdom), and never pay an agency for the part that belongs in your own account.

The season, month by month

Dates follow the Hijri calendar and move about 11 days earlier each year; the Ministry announces exact windows each season. Hajj 1448 is expected around mid-May 2027, so treat the table as the shape of the season, not a schedule.

WhenWhat an American pilgrim does
September to November before HajjRegistration for the coming Hajj opens on hajj.nusuk.sa (for Hajj 2026 it opened in the fall of 2025). Create the account, verify your identity with your passport, and confirm the passport's validity runs well beyond the Hajj dates. Book the meningococcal vaccine and start walking.
December to FebruaryPackage sales run in phases; in January 2026 the Ministry announced an early package-preference phase for eligible pilgrims. Compare providers on Mina camp category, hotel distance in Makkah and Madinah, transport and meals. Pay through the platform; tell your card issuer in advance about a large foreign transaction.
February to AprilThe Hajj visa and Nusuk card are issued against the paid booking. Book flights to the arrival airport the package names, Jeddah or Madinah. Attend classes, read the rites guides, buy travel insurance that names Hajj, and consider enrolling in the State Department's traveler programme so the embassy can reach you.
Late April to MayTravel on the package dates, before the Ministry's arrival cut-off. The rites run from 8 to 13 Dhul Hijjah; most groups return one to two weeks later, often via Madinah.

The pattern of recent seasons is consistent: the cheapest tiers go first and a place is not held while you decide. Settle your tier and budget before the sales phase, not during it.

What moves the price

Package prices are set by the Ministry's providers each season and appear only inside the platform, so we do not quote them; the Hajj cost from the USA guide gives planning ranges and the calculator a sanity check. The drivers you control:

  • Camp category in Mina. The biggest gap between tiers: distance to the Jamarat, cooling, bedding and how many pilgrims share the facilities. See Nusuk package tiers.
  • Hotel distance from the Haram in Makkah and from Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah, and whether the package is shifting or non-shifting; see shifting versus non-shifting packages.
  • Room sharing. Quad, triple or double moves the per-person price more than almost anything else.
  • Flights from the US. Saudia lists nonstop flights from New York JFK, Washington Dulles and Los Angeles; from other cities you connect through those, or through a European or Gulf hub. Hajj-window fares rise steadily, and the West Coast and the Midwest pay more for the connection.
  • Meals and Madinah nights inside the package, and everything outside it: personal food, phone, gifts, Zamzam shipping and the sacrifice if not bundled. The calculator's personal budget setting covers these.

Documents and health

  • US passport valid beyond the Hajj dates with blank pages; the name on the Nusuk account must match it exactly.
  • Hajj visa and Nusuk card, issued through the platform against your paid package. Print copies and keep the app installed.
  • Meningococcal ACYW vaccine: required of every pilgrim from every country by the Saudi Ministry of Health, conjugate vaccine within five years or polysaccharide within three, given at least ten days before arrival, with a certificate naming the vaccine and the date. It is the one health document an American traveller must carry: the US is not on the Ministry's polio, yellow fever or cholera lists in the 1447 H edition.
  • COVID-19: proof required only for higher-risk groups (over 65, pregnant, chronic heart, lung or kidney disease, blood disorders, immunodeficiency, cancer, chronic neurological disease).
  • Medication in original packaging with a doctor's letter; the seasonal influenza vaccine is recommended for all Hajj travellers.
  • Travel insurance naming Hajj and the dates. Saudi consulates-general sit in New York, Houston and Los Angeles alongside the Embassy in Washington for document problems before you travel; the US Embassy in Riyadh publishes its own Hajj and Umrah page for Americans in the Kingdom.

Read the health and fitness preparation guide early; the walking on the days of Hajj is what most first-timers from the US underestimate.

Airports and flights

Book flights only after the package is confirmed in your account, and to the airport the package specifies. Saudia's published network has nonstop service from New York JFK, Washington Dulles and Los Angeles to Jeddah and Riyadh; Gulf carriers and Turkish Airlines offer one-stop itineraries from most major US airports, often at lower fares. Around the Hajj window airlines add capacity but prices climb week by week, so buy as soon as the visa is issued. If your package starts in Madinah, fly into Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz airport and home from Jeddah, or the reverse; an open-jaw ticket is normal for Hajj. Group flights arranged by a community agency can help families with elderly members, provided you know exactly which company holds the ticket and what its refund terms are.

Mistakes that cost American pilgrims their place

  • Paying an agency for a "guaranteed" package outside Nusuk. For a serviced country the Ministry issues Hajj visas only through the platform; pilgrims with outside bookings have been refused. If it is not under your login, it does not exist.
  • Trying Hajj on the tourist eVisa. Americans can get the Saudi tourist eVisa easily and it allows Umrah outside the Hajj season, but never Hajj.
  • Waiting for a later, cheaper phase. Packages sell in order of value; waiting usually buys a worse camp for more money.
  • Buying non-refundable flights before the package is confirmed.
  • A vaccine certificate dated fewer than ten days before departure, or one that does not name the vaccine.
  • A passport with short validity, or a name spelled differently from the Nusuk account.
  • Assuming meals in Mina or nights in Madinah are included. Read the inclusions twice and price the gaps.

Read Hajj scams and how to avoid them and how to choose a Hajj package before the sales phase, and if something has gone wrong, report it to the FTC and the platform's support.

Frequently asked questions

Can Americans use a travel agency for Hajj?
Only for the parts around the Hajj: flights, classes, guiding and group logistics. The Hajj visa and the package come only through your own Nusuk Hajj account, and no US agency can issue them. There is no US bonding scheme for Hajj, so check registration and mosque references before paying an agency for anything.
When does Nusuk Hajj open for US pilgrims?
Registration for a given Hajj has opened in the fall of the previous year (fall 2025 for Hajj 2026), with package sales in phases over the winter and an early preference phase announced in January 2026. Watch hajj.nusuk.sa from September with your passport and payment ready.
Are there direct flights from the US?
Saudia lists nonstop flights from New York JFK, Washington Dulles and Los Angeles. From other cities you connect there or through a European or Gulf hub; check the arrival airport your package names before booking.
What if packages sell out?
Keep the account active and watch for further releases in the same season; providers sometimes add capacity. If you miss the year, consider Umrah on the tourist eVisa in the meantime and be ready when registration reopens the following fall.
